Favoring the winter landscape, Molenaer illustrated frozen canals, ice skaters, barren trees, and snow-covered buildings as in Winter Landscape with Skaters (1660). Molenaer worked in the legacy of Hendrick Avercamp, whose characteristic wintertime elements date back to 1608. In the tradition of Avercamp, Molenaer painted winters of the Netherlands, further influenced by fellow landscape painters Jan van Goyen and Jacob van Ruisdael and in a genre popularized by more renowned contemporaries Isaac van Ostade and Salomon van Ruysdael.Provenance: an important private collection of old masters, London. Identified by Danton Guerault, depicting "A village scene in winter, with church tower in background, with houses and a windmill far left. In the foreground left, figures skating, centre a horse drawing a sleigh, and right a group of figures around a hand cart on sleds." Condition report: thin crack running diagonal to panel, requiring some restoration. No visible retouches. Overall good condition.
