Description
CHODAU Haas C. 1825 Austro Hungarian Porcelain Figure Quill Pen Holder Inkwell. This rare and unusual quill holder is in excellent condition! I must say, it is one of the strangest writing accessories I have seen and the detail is spectacular, right down to the pair of glasses on one of the men and the teeth on the other. The square cavity section below the round holders is for the ink or perhaps other desk accessories. The two men at the top of the stairs in wonderful, period attire, appear to be 2 officials, probably politicians from this region which was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire at that time. The german inscription translates to "A new-born official". It would be very interesting to find out who the two figures represent. As clean as this piece looks, it was actually made about 1825 and the condition is "near mint" without even the slightest bit of paint loss and there are absolutely no cracks, chips or repairs. The impressed (Chodau) mark which is the earliest mark known for this factory, was used from 1811 to 1835 at which time, the factory was owned and operated by Johann Georg Paulus, Wenzel Hass & Johann Georg Lippert. It did not become Haas & Czjzek until 1867. Measures 7.25" wide at the base and stands 5" high.
