Carte de visite photograph of a bust view of Jeremiah H. Gilman wearing uniform with major's shoulder straps. Signed at lower portion of image "Very Truly Yours, J.A. Gilman Capt. C.S. Bvt. Mal USA". Image presents backmark of G. Grelling, Artist, Detroit Michigan. Reverse of carte exhibits 3-cent tax stamp. Carte image presents good tones and exhibits a chip/loss at upper left corner (8mm x 12mm). Gilman graduated in the West Point Class of 1856 and was assigned to the 1st Artillery and in this capacity served as second in command at Ft. Pickens Florida at the beginning of the Civil War. Gilman was promoted captain, 19th US Infantry in May 1861 and was Acting Chief of Artillery, Army of the Ohio, being engaged at Shiloh in which he earned his first brevet to major. Major Gilman served as Chief of Artillery and Acting Ordnance Officer on Rosecrans' staff at Perryville. At Stones' River, Major Gilman was Inspector of Artillery, Army of the Cumberland, and earned a second brevet "for gallant and meritorious service" on December 31, 1862. Subsequently, Lt. Colonel Gilman transferred to the Commissary Department and held a number of important positions until his statutory retirement in 1894.
