Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A stunning brooch of an openwork platinum design that exhibits an ovoid body flanked by a pair of narrow arms. Within the brooch's central section is a polished intaglio carved from moonstone (also known as hecatolite) presenting a right-facing cherub playing an aulos as well as a left-facing winged woman holding a beaked oinochoe. The back of the brooch features a slender pin with a latching lock for a secure fit. A gorgeous and wearable example of fine Neoclassical jewelry!
