Description
A set of four antique cartes de visite depicting male and female figures of locals. Contains two portraits of men in traditional Japanese costumes, a Mino or straw cape for farmers and peasants. Stamped on verso Hung Cheong, cantonese chinese photographer with a studio on Yokohama, Japan. Circa 1880s. This images are taken shortly after American Commodore Matthew Perry forced the opening of the islands to western commerce and culture. The number of photos from non aristocratic or high society individuals from this period is very limited. Works from this and similar studios are part of the collection of the MET Museum in New York.
