Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. 1950 CE. A forged iron sword made to be used as currency, also known as a prestige blade. The long blade widens towards its guard, with a diamond-shaped upper portion and long, diagonal incisions along one side. A bow-shaped wooden handle with a wrapped wicker grip completes the weapon. Size: 4.9" W x 34.5" H (12.4 cm x 87.6 cm)
Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection, purchased in 2006 from Hemingway Gallery, New York, New York, USA

Condition
Rich patina on all surfaces. Some small chips, nicks, and scratches commensurate with age but overall in fine condition. Very slight bend in the blade just above the diamond-shaped upper portion.
