1800 Romance of Three Kingdoms CHINA Japan Tsuzoku Sangokushi History Legend
Katsushika Taito, a pupil of Hokusai, was considered the disciple most faithful to the great artist`s painting method and with the closest working relationship with him. `Ehon Tsuzoku Sangokushi` translated as Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is a 14th-century novel that is part historical, part legend, and part mythical. The story romanticizes and dramatizes the lives of feudal lords and their retainers, focusing on the three powers that emerged, Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu, and their plots, personal and military battles, and struggles to achieve dominance for almost 100 years.
“Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is acclaimed as one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature and its influence has been compared to Shakespeare for English literature.
“The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is comparable to the Bible in East Asia. Its one of the most-read if not, the most-read classics in the region.” (Kim Hyung).
This rare edition of 6 volumes by Ikeda Tori is written in Kanbun in the typical column format bound in the “fukurotoji (variously translated as “bound-pocket,” or “pouch” binding)” style (Keio).
