Description
Harold Newton (American/Florida, 1934-1994) oil on board seascape depicting a Florida coastline with lighthouse at the edge of a beach, radiating light under an overcast sky. Signed "H. Newton" lower left. Gray/gold painted crown-molded wood frame. Sight - 23"H x 30"W. Frame - 27 1/2"H x 34"W. Note: The consignor commissioned the painting directly from the artist in Daytona Beach, Florida circa 1980. A notarized statement from the consignor detailing the acquisition of this painting is available to the winning bidder. Note: Harold Newton was one of the Florida African-American painters known as the Highwaymen, which included Newton, James Gibson, and Alfred Hair. These mostly itinerant artists were influenced by Albert E Backus, the "dean of Florida landscape painting" and often sold their works from the trunks of their cars. The lighthouse is unusual subject matter for Newton, and it was painted by him at the request of the consignor.
