Description
Two (2) American School, 19th-century oil on canvas portrait paintings. 1st item: Painting depicing a young female in three-quarter view with upswept brown hair attired in a black dress with a gilt brooch and a pink satin stole with floral patterns, against a draped curtain backdrop with partial landscape view beyond. Unsigned. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with foliate carved corners. Sight: 29 1/2" H x 24 1/4" W. Framed: 38 1/2" H x 33 1/4" W. Circa 1840. 2nd item: Painting depicting a young man in three-quarter view with brown hair, attired in a collared white shirt with black necktie, a cream damask waistcoat and black suit, resting his arm on a scroll carved ledge, against a dark background. Unsigned. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with foliate carved corners. Dated 1839 in pencil, en verso of stretcher. Sight: 28 3/4" H x 24 3/4" W. Framed: 37" H x 32 1/2" W.

Condition
1st item: Overall surface grime and craquelure with scattered tiny flakes, mostly to background. Portions of canvas discolored and fluoresce under UV inspection, including to the background, subject's left shoulder, and the lower half of her face. Canvas has been relined. Frame with discoloration and losses to gilt, largest measuring 1/2" H x 7/8" W. 2nd item: Overall surface grime and craquelure with scattered errant white paint, largest measuring 1 1/4" L. Tear to canvas upper right quadrant, background, measuring 1/2" H x 3/8" W. Minute portion of canvas at the subject's hairline fluoresces under UV light inspection. Canvas has been relined. Frame with discoloration and wear to outer edge.
