Robert was the brother of Brigadier General Henry M. Robert and the author of Robert's Rules of Order. Joseph was the Principal of The Robert's School of Parliamentary Law, Steinway Hall, Chicago and the Director of the Department of Parliamentary Law in the Soper School of Oratory, Chicago. The Robert's brothers set out to bring the rules of the American Congress to members of ordinary societies with the publication of Pocket Manual of Rules of Order. It sold half a million copies before a revision of 1915 and made Robert's name synonymous with the orderly rule of reason in deliberative societies.
