Western/Central Africa, Cameroon, Bali peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden pipe of a cylindrical form with a highly stylized anthropomorphic face presented on the front. The intriguing countenance features diagonal eyes above puffy cheeks, a narrow nose above full lips, and borders of zigzags and pecked patterns lining the upper and lower peripheries. The deep receptacle bears ample evidence of use, and a brass pipe stem projects out from behind the rim. Size: 1.5" W x 9.25" H (3.8 cm x 23.5 cm); 9.125" H (23.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private St. Petersburg, Florida, USA collection; ex-old private collection, Germany, owned since the 1970s

Condition
Slight bending and a few indentations to brass stem, with nicks and encrustations to receptacle body and face, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Pipe stem cannot be removed.
