French, 19th century. Pair of carved giltwood confessional bergeres or wing chairs in the regence/Louis XIV rococo taste, having scrolled foliate decoration with putti head crest, red and gold Scalamandre upholstery with cherubs set against florals with loose seat cushions, and rising on cabriole legs with shell carved knees and roquillard feet. Unmarked. Provenance: Having a purported history of being owned by a Duchess of Talleyrand. Approx. of one, h. 48.75", w. 32", d. 24".
Condition
Scattered chips to finish; stable joint shrinkage; some wear to upholstery with tears; evidence of previous worming (inactive); frame is structurally sound.
