Description
Antique 1730 engraving

"John V, King of Portugal", by Georg Paul Busch, undated, c. 1730s-1750s, etching, engraving and stipple on paper, half-length, face turned to the left, looking left upwards, with long curled wig, wearing armours and furred cloak, right arm raised; in oval frame with leaves, trumpets and crown above; on pedestal. Lettered on pedestal with title: "Iohannes V / Portugallice et Algarbiae Rex."

Cut to design, 3.3/4" x 5.3/4"; [94mm x 145mm] and attached to a larger laid paper, 5.3/4" x 7.1/2" [148mm x 189mm], A.L. handwritten number "79" at the upper right corner. Shows some aging, very good condition.

Authentic eighteenth century engraving. The COA is included.

Georg Paul Busch (b.??- 1756 in Berlin), German Engraver: Berlin; student of Constantin Friedrich Blesendorf; mostly active in the 1730s, teacher of Georg Friedrich Schmidt (q.v.)

Another copy of this print is located in the British Museum [Museum's registration number Bb,12.17]. The copy in the British Museum is slightly trimmed with remaining margins and signature under the frame "Busch sculpt Berolini".

John V (1689-1750), known as the Magnanimous and the Portuguese Sun King, was a monarch of the House of Braganza who ruled as King of Portugal during the first half of the 18th century. John V's reign saw the rise of the prestige of Portugal and its monarchy, which had been in decline among European courts, to a new level of prosperity and wealth.

Provenance:

This engraving comes from a collection of engravings bound by the German art collector "A.L." The finalized collection of hand-numbered engravings is dated 1762 which provides additional warranty that the engravings are authentic and created prior to 1762; auctioned in London, UK.
