Item Details
Description
Three 16th century volumes: 1. ENNIUS. Poetae Cum Primis Censendi, Annalium, Libb. XIIX, Quae apud various Auctores superant, Fragmenta: conlecta, composita, inlustrata, AB Paullo G.F.P.N. Merula Qui Eadem Fixit, Dicavit, Savravit, S.P.Q. Dordraceno L. M. Leiden: Ex officina Ioannis Paetsii, & Ludouvici Elzevirii, 1595. 8vo (8 x 6 1/8 in.). Full parchment with stamped spine. Fair-Good. Spine and covers darkened/soiled. Foxing/toning and a sizable corner dampstain that extends throughout about a quarter of text block. Two pages near front with worn(?) holes, the biggest about 3/4 of an inch. 2. ERIZZO, SEBASTIANO. Venice: Domenico e Gio. Varisco et compagni, 1568. 8vo (8 1/2 x 6 1/4 in.). Full parchment, handwritten, author/title on spine. Fully engraved illustrated title page, 520 woodcuts of coins throughout text. Appears complete. Last page Registro with publisher name and date handwritten. Previous owner's bookplate and ink inscription on pastedown. Good-Very Good. Binding is tight. Scratching and discoloring to parchment, front and back covers bent over text block. Toning, soiling/smudges, light foxing; a dampstain at first page of first section extends to about p. 75. Small corner tears on first page of index and p. 85. 3. PAVLINA DE RECTA PASCHAE CELEBRATIONE: ET DE DIE PASSIONIS DOMINI NOSTRI IESU CHRISTI. 4to (12 1/2 x 8 1/4 in.). Half vellum and parchment over boards, black gilt morocco label to spine, three raised bands. "Pavlina" is handwritten on back cover, and "Davina" is handwritten on fore-edges. Handwritten note on title page indicates the book is the likely work of Paul IV (Giovanni Carrussa), who died in Rome in 1559. This note and further notations and marginalia appear to be those of a previous owner, H. R. Clarke, whose name is inscribed on the pastedown and dated 1853, and whose photograph is glued to the verso of the free endpaper and signed and dated 1857. Poor. The parchment is very worn and scratched, exposing the board underneath, and a few wormholes. The vellum spine is worn and peeling over the string of raised bands; the head of spine is split at the hinges and torn. The title page is extensively dampstained, toned, with fore-edge tears; pages are warped, foxing; at section entitled "Opinio Ioannis de Monte Regio" there is an extensive dampstain, and another extends through to most of the last half of the volume. Recent bookplate on pastedown, and on back pastedown journal/newspaper clippings from 1860s-1880s are glued on with notes from Clarke.
