Description
A membership card signed, dated, and inscribed in pencil by Cuban welterweight boxing champion Gerardo Gonzalez (1926-2003), known to fans as Kid Gavilan, as "Best wishes / Kid Gavilan / 4-4-54" verso. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded Mint 9. Gavilan autographed the back of a birthday membership card from Chateau Madrid, a swanky Manhattan nightclub and restaurant. Expected wear including gentle wrinkles, else near fine and in vivid colors, the card measuring 5" x 4." The slab measures 10" x 6.625."
Kid Gavilan held the welterweight boxing record between 1951-1954; the "Cuban Hawk" was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. Kid's agent was Angel Lopez (1902-1968), a former Spanish fighter who also managed Puerto Rican featherweight Willie Hernandez and Cuban heavyweight Omelia Agramonte in the 1950s. Lopez was the owner of Chateau Madrid, a midtown Manhattan plush Spanish nightclub that attracted Spanish-speaking artists, dancers, and athletes.
