German Emperor Wilhelm I, "Wilhelm the Great", Signed Appointment
3pp of a bifolium, measuring 8.75" x 14.25", Berlin, dated September 18, 1880. Wilhelm I, Emperor of Germany, appointment signed "Wilhelm", written in German. Appointing Major Karl Julius Friedrich Graeff to Oberst Lieutenant, in recognition for his service with the Grenadier Regiment King Friedrich Wilhelm IV No. 2. With flattened folds and faint edge toning. With a large and bold signature.
Wilhelm I (1797-1888) was King of Prussia from 1861 and first German Emperor, as well as the first Head of State of a united Germany from 1871 until his death. He became regent for his brother Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1858 after Friedrich suffered numerous strokes, leaving him partially paralyzed and mentally incapacitated. Under Wilhelm I's rule, Germany achieved unification and more liberal policies.
