Curtis Photogravure Plate "The North American Indian"
Large photogravure plate from Edward Sheriff Curtis' "The North American Indian", plate 677 entitled "Wakonda-Oto". The sepia portrait is one of the large supplemental plates from volume nineteen of Curtis' comprehensive project to document all the native tribes of the Americas, a many-decade feat completed in 1930. This plate is one of only 36 large supplemental plates from volume XIX, focusing on the Indians of Oklahoma, the Wichita, Southern Cheyenne, Oto, Southern Comanche, and the Peyote Cult. Photogravure plate measures 17" x 21.875" on Van Gelder paper with deckled edges. With the title, plate number, Curtis' 1927 copyright, and printer's credit (Suffolk Engraving Co. of Cambridge) in margins. Matted and framed to 26" x 30". A few nicks to frame, the portrait is near fine.
