IV.
Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, December 31, 1869-Nice, November 3, 1954) was a French painter known for his use of color and for his original and fluid use of drawing. As a draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, but primarily as a painter, he is widely recognized, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the great artists of the 20th century. At the beginning of his career, he was identified with Fovism and by the 1920s he had already stood out for his mastery in the expressive language of color and drawing, which he displayed in an immense production that spanned more than half a century, and that established his reputation as one of the central figures of modern art. During his career, he knew how to combine in his works the influence of artists such as Van Gogh or Gauguin, with that of Persian ceramics, African art or Moorish fabrics.
