Description
Western Europe, England, London, George III period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE, inscribed "Nairne & Blunt London." A beautiful stick barometer of a tall, slender size with a body hand-carved from rich caramel-hued mahogany. The tool features a hemispherical reservoir cover on the bottom meant for holding a certain volume of mercury that gradually fills the frontal glass tube as the barometric pressure around the tool fluctuates. At the top is a brass barograph panel inscribed with inch measurements - from 28" to 31" - next to a manual vernier scale on one side, and on the other are general measurements reading Stormy, Mch Rain, RAIN, Change, FAIR, Set Fair, and Very Dry. The manufacturer name "Nairne & Blunt London" are inscribed above the topmost lockplate of the glass tube. Size: 4.75" W x 37.875" H (12.1 cm x 96.2 cm)

Condition
One screw on topmost lock plate missing as shown. Softening to inscribed text on barograph has rendered several words nearly illegible. Minor abrasions to wood components and brass barograph, and small chips along verso. Great patina to wood and brass components.
