Superb Original Skin with variegated yellow orange patina. The strike is razor sharp. This carefully preserved Gem belongs in an advanced collection of Saint-Gaudens gold. While World War I raged in Europe at places like Ypres and Gallipoli, 1915 was also the year of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco and the laying of the first stone of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The Philadelphia Mint struck a fairly limited number of double eagles that year -- 152,000 coins -- as compared to the mintage in San Francisco. 1915 double eagles are somewhat available at lower Mint State levels; they are a serious challenge above MS-64. The number of available Gem specimens drops off precipitously at MS-65 and it is always noteworthy when one comes up for sale. These coins are almost always sharply struck, and their rich color offers considerable eye appeal. Tied for 2nd finest Known.
