ABOUT THE ART

From the enclosed letter:

Dear Member:

Inside the sensitive elegance of Bernard Buffet a roaring giant struggled to get out.

And succeeded! With every stroke of his brush Buffet unleashes forces that are more than human in their power to excite and satisfy feelings that the viewer is scarcely conscious of possessing.

There's a strange fluid energy flowing from Buffet that gives all his work the quality of being larger than life-size...that makes his every creation the subject of world-wide controversy...that made him, at twenty, the most popular young painter since Raphael was commissioned to paint at the Vatican at the age of twenty-six.

Critically, Buffet is the heir to Picasso. And his success has been phenomenal. A Parisian friend was heard to shrug away the five-figure expense of Buffet's custom-built car by saying, "After all, it scarcely cost him a day's work."

All Buffet originals have an identity that provides instant recognition. The three works which we have been fortunate enough to obtain for distribution to members -- are unmistakably Buffet originals.

These large full-color original lithographs are titled:

'Notre Dame de Paris', 'Canal St. Martin' and 'Le Pont Neuf'

You'll find color photographs of these masterworks enclosed, but these photos only pallidly reflect the full glory of the originals. The authenticity of the latter is attested to by the Societe de Verification de Paris et New York. Each has been signed in the stone. And the stones have been defaced.

The Guild invites you to examine any or all of these works free for thirty days. Never before have we been privileged to offer you a more exciting find -- not aesthetically and financially.

Each of these originals will arrive for your inspection double-matted and beautifully framed by the House of Kulicke, framers to the National Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The particular frame selected by Robert Kulicke for the Buffet original lithographs is the one which was originally created for the Museum of Modern Art in 1960.

Please take a moment right now to look at the enclosed photographs and read the short brochure. Remember, originals are alive and that no words or photograph can truly capture the essence of any original Buffet work of art.

Each of the three originals is in full color. Each measures 22 by 29 inches, double-matted in the Kulicke metal frame. Each may be acquired for $65 plus shipping and handling (and the prices are less than half the independently appraised value).

But speed is essential. Because of the severely limited number of these works available, we must have your reservations by December 30, 1968.

Re-examine the photographs now. Then close your eyes and imagine your home and collection graced with one of these originals. And, finally, send us your reservation today to be certain to receive the original Buffet of your selection.

Sincerely yours,

M. Thoreau-la-Salle, Curator

P.S. The works of Bernard Buffet really need no praising from the Guild. His genius has already influenced a generation of artists now at work. It is a pleasure to offer you your choice among three of his most recent works; they will undoubtedly appreciate in the years to come.
