Item Details
Description
Howard William Kottler (American, 1930-1989). "Gold Angel Pot" earthenware and metal leafs, ca. 1980s. A wonderful example of Howard Kottler's whimsical creativity, "Gold Angel Pot" presents a voluminous body enveloped in copper leaf with a trio of sinuous silvered motifs adorning each side, framed by golden wings. Kottler embraced the wild explorations of the California Funk new movement which rejected traditional art theories and granted freedoms to employ satiric commentary on American popular culture. His art is oftentimes humorous and drew upon various influences such as Art Deco, Pop Art, Dada, and Cubism. Size: 9.375" L x 17.375" W x 16.75" H (23.8 cm x 44.1 cm x 42.5 cm)

Howard Kottler earned a BA in biological sciences (1952), an MA in ceramics (1956), and a PhD in ceramics (1964) at Ohio State University. In addition, he earned and MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art (1957) where he studied with Maija Grotell. He also received a Fulbright to study in Finland that same year. In 1964, Kottler moved to Seattle, Washington to teach at the University of Washington and was exposed to the California funk movement.

Kottler's "Lemon Punch Pot" (1986) - a vessel of a similar size and style - sold for $6000 at Rago Auctions, Modern Design - Modern Ceramics & Glass, September 23, 2018, lot 1551.
