Description
A very large mask of a ferocious Tiger, used in festivals in Java where young men would compete to "kill" a Tiger, an ancient rite of manhood dramatized these days to commemorate the tradition. The mask is made from a wood or bamboo frame with animal hide and glass eyes, painted designs. This is a very rare example not commonly found on the market. The mask measures 18 x 18 inches. Found in Java, Indonesia. Provenance: Daeng Iskandar, Indonesia.
