Title: A Geometrical Plan & North West Elevation of his Majesty's Dock-Yard at Chatham, with ye village of Brompton adjacent.
Artists: John Milton (active 1743 - 76) & John Cleveley the Elder (1712-1777).
Engraver: Pierre Charles Canot (1710-1777 ).
Engraving, 1755.
London Published according to Act of Parliament, September the 2nd, 1755.
Image size 18 1/2 x 25 1/2" (47 x 63.8 cm).
Title continues "To... Peregrine Bertie, Duke of Ancaster and Kestaven... by Tho. Milton."
A plan of the Royal Dockyard at Chatham, surveyed and drawn by John Milton (active c. 1743-76) and shipping by John Cleveley the Elder. Cleveley spent most his life working as a shipwright, becoming an artist relatively late in life. He specialized in painting ship launches at the Royal Dockyard in Deptford. Milton was a minor marine artist whose son, Thomas (1743-1827), appears to be the dedicator of the plate. It is assumed that the father was the primary artist, as Thomas would have been a pre-teen when this plate was published (Thomas would become an engraver later in life, however). This plate is one in a set of the dockyards.
A key to the plan appears on the left border and a key to the elevation appears on the right border.
