Description
Late Meiji - early Taisho (1910s) Japanese watercolor on paper depicting one of the Nio (also called Kongōrikishi) - a wrathful and muscular guardian of the Buddha standing at the entrance of a Buddhist temple. Nio are dharmapala manifestations of the bodhisattva Vajrapani, the oldest and most powerful of the Mahayana Buddhist pantheon. This particular image represents Naraen Kongō and is located to the left of the entrance to the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko - the Mausoleum of the first Tokugawa shogun Ieyasu. His hands are open and clenched, and his mouth is closed, representing the vocalization of the sound “N” - the last letter of the Sanskrit alphabet. Beautifully painted, subtle use of color, wonderfully captured expression of divine madness, great depiction of textile patterns. Signed YOKOTSUKA NIKKO in the lower right corner - the artist was active in the Nikko area in the 1910 and painted watercolors of other statues in Nikko. The painting is in excellent condition, the back with traces of adhesive tape. Size 13 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches. See the companion image of Misshaku Kongō - the guardian to the right of the entrance - in my catalog.
