Description
The Official Architectural Rendering of Vashon Highschool, Saint Louis
Watercolor on paper, signed by artist lower left, 1925. Commissioned by original architect Rockwell Milligan and hand signed lower right. In original 1925 oak frame and glass, with incised plaque.About the Artist: Born in Australia to English parents, and studying in Paris, Woolrych began his career well away from the St. Louis area, developing specialties in figure drawing/nudes, landscape, and portraiture. His wife, Bertha Hewitt Woolrych, whom he met in Paris, hailed from Alton, Illinois, and eventually the two moved to the St. Louis area. Here it seems Woolrych thrived as a local artist without much interference, perhaps well known for murals in the dome in the capital building: "Wealth of the North" in Jefferson City, Missouri as well in the St. Louis Library, and a body of work that continues to circulate in the local art scene today. Sight: 19" height, 33.5" width; frame: 32.75" height, 47.5" width
