A rare early Meissen silver-gilt-mounted tankard, circa 1723
Painted with an elaborate Kauffahrtei scene depicting merchants and their wares, and a coach and horses, by a quayside with ships in the distance, within a gilt scrollwork cartouche filled with Böttger lustre and embellished with iron-red scrollwork, the back of the tankard painted with birds and phoenixes in flight and scattered insects, the strap handle with indianische Blumen, the silver-gilt cover with a palmette thumbpiece, engraved with a strap- and scrollwork motif in the centre and a band of strap- and scrollwork around the rim, 17cm high

Condition
There are scattered areas of professional retouching to the gilt scrollwork border around the rim and to some areas on the cartouche with a few tiny spots of rubbing here and there and minimal rubbing to the lustre. There is also a bit of retouching along the gilt band to the rim and some spots of flaking here (some visible in cat. illustration). There are one or two tiny faint scratches to the enamels of the sky in the scene and the flowers on the handle. There are a few tiny scratches to the gilt band around the footrim and a small spot of oxidisation from the mount here.
