Description
Three Byzantine polychrome sgraffito ware chalices
Circa 12th-14th Century A.D.
Each with glazed decoration in ochre and green on cream, the smallest with a sgraffito incised bird motif on the interior and a band of plaited design on the exterior; the largest with interior decorated with scrolls and a herringbone motif; and a chalice the interior with a tondo of stylised foliate motifs, 9.5cm; 12cm and 14cm diam. Condition
Largest: the chalice appears to be intact. There are patches of flaking to the glaze on the interior the largest measuring approx. 1.4x2cm. Other minor patches of chipped loss to the shoulders and the rim.
Medium: the chalice appears to be intact. There is small patches of flaked loss to the glaze of the interior of the chalice, the largest measuring approx. 1.6x0.8cm. There are other minor chipped losses to the rim and shoulders.
Smallest: the bowl of the chalice in good condition with two chipped losses to the foot the largest measuring approx. 2.6x1.1cm. With patches of loss to the glaze on the interior, the largest measuring approx. 4.5x1.3cm. With other chipped losses to the rim and shoulders of the chalice.
All with overall surface wear including chipping, pitting and scratching and minor losses to the glazed decoration.
