Description
Avangard No. 10, [The Vanguard, no. 10], an artwork for a photomontage poster by an anonymous artist associated with an obscure periodical (monthly?) publication produced by the Communist Party organization of the Chemical Department of the Leningrad Front, [Leningrad], 1944, 87.5 x 31 cm.
A curious example of visual propaganda produced at the grass-roots level. It should not come as much of a surprise that we could not find any information about the publication. One may guess that the poster was produced in October 1944 (the 10th month of the year). This would explain references to the upcoming Revolution Anniversary and the odd Romanian-language slogan in the center of the composition, likely picked from September reports about Romanians celebrating their “liberation” by the Red Army (as the Peace Treaty with Romania was signed in mid-September).
