Description
A. A. Turner, "Villas on the Hudson"
"A Collection of Photo-Lithographs of Thirty-One Country Residences" (New York: Appleton, 1860), thirty-one lithographic plates with gold-printed frames and legend, some with one- or two-color stencil tinting, with additional plates of floor plans, in black half morocco on green buckram, the front board with fancy gilt-stamped title and author, the preliminary blank leaf with penciled owner's signature "Gallier".
plates 13-1/4" x 18-1/4"; overall 19-1/4" x 13-1/2"
Provenance: Ex libris: James Gallier, Jr. (1827-1868), New Orleans, Louisiana.
Notes: This record of the country homes of New York's elite on the eve of the Civil War was taken by photographer Austin Augustus [born Abijah Austin] Turner (ca. 1831-1866) in the late 1850s. It is widely regarded as the first major work published featuring the new technology of photolithography. It is not surprising, then, that a copy would find its way into the library of the noted New Orleans architect James Gallier, Jr.
