Very Large Imperial Era German State Flag. Approximately 14' x 9'6". Cotton, each color a separate piece. This flag is from the collection of noted flag expert Dr. Clarence Rungee. Dr. Rungee has annotated the hoist of this flag with "S.S. St. Louis" and his museum record for this flag has a long explanation about the infamous "Voyage of the Damned" and plight of her Jewish passengers attempting to flee Nazi persecution. However, there is another note written in ink on the hoist "Holand [sic] America Line" and the St. Louis was part of the Hamburg-America Line. In any case it is more likely that this is a pre-1918 flag. Condition: Good. A few scattered small to moderate sized holes, tears and occasional stains.
