Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A nice gathering of 7 Mixtec artifacts formed from stone or pottery. First are a trio of penate figures in either opaque white, translucent white, or opaque turquoise-hued stone. Next is a seated stone figure with an abstract countenance and a reptilian body with protruding spinal scales. A discoid pottery earspool is decorated with incised linear and concentric circle motifs, and a petite pottery object resembles either a chair backing or a fragment of a miniature toy cart. The largest item is a smooth-topped stone object, perhaps a lid for a vessel or a variation of a cloth beater. Size of largest: 4.125" L x 2" W (10.5 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition
Repairs to tallest penate figure and reptilian figure, with chips and adhesive residue along break lines. Losses to two limbs of reptilian figure and portions of miniature toy cart as shown. Largest stone item has chipping to peripheries, and all items have light abrasions and softening to some finer details. Nice surface smoothness to largest stone item and 3 penate figures.
