Description
**Originally Listed At $350**

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning statue of Buddha, skillfully hand-carved from wood and enveloped in a lustrous gilding. The tranquil deity sits in lotus position with his hands in the Bhumisparsha mudra; his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward, while his left lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. His serene visage is comprised of slender, downcast eyes beneath an arched brow, a broad nose, and a gentle smile, all flanked by a pair of huge ears with dangling lobes and crowned by a tapered ushnisha. Size: 4.2" W x 13.1" H (10.7 cm x 33.3 cm)

In the calling the earth to witness Mudra, the Buddha's left hand rests on his lap with palm upright and his right hand touches the earth. This Mudra symbolizes the moment of Buddha's enlightenment. According to legend, Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha) was attacked by a demon Mara with legions of frightful monsters. They intended to scare Siddhartha away from the sacred Bodhi tree. However, Siddhartha would not move. Mara then dared to claim Siddhartha's seat of enlightenment for himself, claiming that his spiritual deeds were more significant than Siddhartha's. Mara's monsters cried out, "I am his witness!" and Mara looked at Siddhartha and challenged, "Who will speak for you?" Siddhartha's replied without words. Instead, he reached out his right hand to touch the earth, and the earth boldly pronounced, "I bear you witness!"
