Item Details
Description
This sampler is an outstanding example of a combination of Berlin wool work counted cross stitch, strong graphic design work with deliciously charming large vignettes, and delightful color combinations. Although I have seen the verse used many times in other samplers, it is always a welcome one because the child is expressing gratitude for parental care: “This I did to let you see What care my parents took of me.” The fact that the stitcher accomplished this magnificent piece of work at the tender age of 10 makes this piece all the more remarkable and fascinating.; Our stitcher proudly signed and dated it right in the middle of the work, “Mary Oliver, Aged 10 Years, 1860.” The exceptionally large main vignette is one of my favorite parts of the sampler. Mary not only put in a large-antlered, spotted deer but also two adorable sheep flanking it. If you observe carefully, you will see a rabbit almost hidden in the ground among the flowers and foliage upon which it rests. Two leafy trees stand as bookmarks on either side of the large vignette. The two fruit-and flower-filled cornucopias as well as the pair of fruit-filled baskets bring both color and added design interest to her sampler.; Mary enclosed her verse motifs and vignette in a large, scrolling border of wide oak leaves attached to a vine with looping tendrils on each side. The leaves are wonderfully depicted with complimentary colors and outlined to give them shape and substance in and apart from the sampler itself.; Our stitcher used a range of fall colors that harmonize with each other. Some of her color combinations are quite striking, bringing one’s eye to these appealing motifs. This is the type of sampler that not only strikes you as exceptionally artistic, but one that compels closer inspection in order to enjoy all of it.; The sampler is housed in its original, wide, shaped rosewood frame with a very good wood and gesso gilded slip. The rosewood has acquired a deep, rich color and a soft patina. The gold slip has turned a marvelous lemon-yellow color. The combination of the rosewood frame with its gilded slip sets off the colors in the sampler well.; The condition of the woolwork is excellent. It has retained much of its original, deep-hued color. There is slight overall fading, but little more than expected of a sampler of this age.; The background linen has age toned to a very mellow golden color. This background color only enhances the antique character of the piece. The original rosewood frame is in very good condition. There is some wear to it along the edges; however, this wear does not detract greatly from one’s enjoyment of this fabulous piece of needlework.; It measures a perfect 30-5/8 inches square, including the frame.
