Very rare A.L.S. on 'State of South Carolina Head Quarters' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Mar. 19, CIn1861 - less than a month before the attack on Fort Sumter. Gist writes to Lt. John Rutledge of the part: '...Sir, You are hereby appointed Inspector of Ordnance for the Batteries in and around Charleston Harbor, by his Excellency Gen'l Pickens, and will report to Brig. Gen'l Beauregard Cmg. for duty...' Fine condition. Rutledge had resigned the U.S. Navy the previous February 23rd to join the Confederate Navy. In this capacity, he held a crucial position in the preparation for the bombardment of Fort Sumter, and was with Beauregard when the fort was attacked on April 12, 1861.
