ALBUM OF PRISONERS AT FORT WARREN, BOSTON 1861-1862
Item Details
Description
An incredible autograph album compiled by Mrs. E. J. Warren including the signatures and sentiments of 94 prisoners held at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. Warren collected the signatures between December 25, 1861 and January 22, 1862 when the prison housed the most important civilian, military and political prisoners, many arrest under Lincoln's dispensing of 'habeus corpus'. The two best known signers are John Slidell and James Mason, the two Confederate emissaries stopped en route to England to negotiate with the British and whose arrest nearly prompted a war between the U.S. and Great Britain. Both have signed the same page. Their secretaries, George Eustis and James E. McFarland, arrested with them, are also present. Prominent Maryland legislators are also included, most jailed as a result of having conspired to bring about the 'Baltimore Riot' of April 20-26, 1861. Pro-secession rioters attacked Union troops and burned railroad bridges to prevent additional troops from entering the city, this on the order of the city's mayor, with the assistance of members of the Board of Police. This album includes the signatures of Mayor George William Brown, as well as commissioners Charles Howard, William H. Gatchell, and William F. McKewen. In September, 1861 Maryland' sovereignty was extinguished and replaced with a military government as it appeared the state legislature would vote for secession. Fifteen members of that legislature were arrested and sent to Fort Warren - and have signed this album. Officers in the U.S.Navy who submitted their resignations or refused to take an oath of allegiance upon arrival in port from abroad were also imprisoned. After being released, these men provided invaluable service to the Confederate Navy. A number of them have signed this album, including Flag Officer Samuel Barron, Sr., Commodore William H. Ward, and submarine pioneer William T. Glassell. Additionally, 24 officers from North Carolina military units that surrendered to Gen. Benjamin Butler at Fort Hatteras also signed Mrs. Warren's book. Most of these men were from the 7th North Carolina Vols., later designated the 17th N.C. Infantry. With them are members of the 1st North Carolina Artillery (10th N.C. Vols.) and the 32nd North Carolina Infantry. The capture of these men showed that Confederate prisoners would be treated as prisoners of war and not traitors. Other notable figures in the album include Gen. John Pegram (who would be killed in 1865 at Hatcher's Run), Gov. Charles Morehead of Kentucky, and Charles J. Faulkner, 'Stonewall' Jackson's A.A.G. Also represented are a wide variety of important figures from the period, including doctors, lawyers, merchants, machinists, mechanics, newspaper editors (including the grandson of Francis Scott Key), spies, Confederate recruiting officers, arms smugglers, blockade runners, and the commandant of Fort Warren, Justin Dimick. Bound in red leather with gold decorative cover, in custom clamshell box. This historic album is an important - and fascinating record of the Union's desperate effort to secure all 'traitors' in its midst in the earliest days of the war. A lengthy descriptive list of those who have signed is available upon request.
