Item Details
Description
The obelisk form topped by orb and spire with figural lions also suspends a figural bird on swing over the spice compartment having a hinged door and engraved details. The base with four figural grape feet and waisted stem was originally surrounded by five bells suspended from the base of the spice compartment. Only three of the bells remain.

The base bears an illegible maker's stamp along with the Russian silver standard mark 84, assayer's mark (and the year 1884) and an unclear city stamp attributed as being that of St. Petersburg.

Spice towers like this have been a tradition in Jewish celebrations for centuries.

Measures 11.5 inches, Weighs 7.10 ozt.

Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland. In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum (nelson-atkins.org). The content of this auction bears testament to their keen eye and varied interests. No property has been added; each lot here originates with the Sosland family and sells without reserve.

We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell.

Until further notice, we cannot offer international shipping in-house.
Condition
Good condition noting the loss of two bells, the door and its catch are both loose in their fitting and the entire object lists slightly overall.
