Eben Comins (American, 1875-1949), Landscape with Sand Dunes
oil on canvas, signed and illegibly dated at lower right, indistinct inscription at lower left, presented in a period gilt frame, the canvas with Hardy-Alan of Paris stencil to verso.
Stretcher size 19 1/2 x 29 in.; Frame dimensions 23 3/4 x 33 in.
Eben Comins was a Boston-native artist who had an adept technical knowledge of painting techniques, and received a gold medal at the Panama Exposition for his contributions to art instruction. He taught in various locations including his Boston studio, at the Saint Paul School of Fine Arts, Saint Paul, Minnesota, Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts; the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Connecticut; and operated an art school in Washington, DC before his death in Falls Church, VA on April 13, 1949. He is best known for his portraits, contemporary genre scenes, and landscape works.

Faint stretcher mark along top edge of canvas; light surface grime; several minute surface nicks at right; no evidence of restoration visible under UV light; chip to frame lower left.
