Plate 429 A Walpi Snake Priest, 1900. 15.4x11.3" photogravure on 17x12.5" Tissue paper cornered on 21x16.5" modern Rives BFK cream board with original 22x18" Holland Van Gelder overmat. Curtis wrote about this: The subject is Koyawaima ("gray [dawn] walking"), who has been chief of the fraternity since 1899.
This was taken in 1900, on Curtis' first trip to Hopi. He returned many times to photograph the Walpi Snake Dance, making a short film in 1904. The Snake Dance was an internationally media event, attracting 48 photographers in 1898. Several years later the Hopi prohibited all photography of the ceremony.
