5 Taoist Ceremonial Paintings, China, Mid 20th C. 5 rectangular paper sheets with portrait faces painted on recto, characters on verso; sides curled around wood support sticks, string ties on sides. Paintings like this were used by Taoist priests of the Yao Mien during religious ceremonies during which they were hung on the walls of temples or in the priest's home. The strings indicate that they may also have been used as masks in ceremonies. Size: ranging from 7.5'' x 7.25'', (19 x 18 cm) to 8'' x 8.5'', (20 x 22 cm). Provenance: Ex. Roger Hollander collection.
