Description
Late 19th century. Paper scales, alcohol and mercury thermometer, contained in an ornately carved wooden case. Admiral Fitzroy (1805-1865) was the captain of the HMS Beagle that took Charles Darwin to Patagonia. After his retirement from the governorship of New Zealand, he turned his attention to meteorology and invented his own barometer. Wear on wood is consistent with its age, top carved decoration detached, and the original glass is missing. 9" L x 3" W x 48" H
