Native American/First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely leather satchel, hand-sewn from caribou hide with a caribou fur front flap and caribou hoof adornments. Displaying a rectangular form, the fascinating piece presents a large main compartment and 2 smaller front pockets, all covered by the fur-lined front flap, which is held closed by a small bell-form button. The bottom of the front flap is adorned by 6 pairs for ovoid caribou hoof ornaments, while a long strap attached via a metal ring rises from the top of the bag. A fine lattice motif decorates the front-most pocket. Size (of pouch): 12.5" W x 13.75" H (31.8 cm x 34.9 cm); Size (of strap): 53.5" L (135.9 cm)
