Description
Very fine Amate bark painting by Nahuatl artist, likely from Guerrero or Puebla state, Mexico. The painting shows a creative interpretation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, here with long black braids flying on either side of her brightly patterned skirt, her bare feet perched above a crescent moon with two indigenous angels supporting her. Her starry cloak spreads out on each side, and she is flanked by indigenous men and women carrying flowers and tall candles, with joyful rabbits and exuberant piles of tropical fruit. A very good example of this Mexican folk art. Frame, approx. 18 1/4" x 26 1/4".
