Description
French soldier and politician, duc de Lauzun, later duc de Biron, (1747–1793) remembered for his roles in the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars. Commanding Lauzun's Legion, he successfully reinforced Washington's troops during the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. He then commanded the French Revolutionary Army on the La Rochelle front during the French Revolution, operating against the Vendéan insurgency. Accused of treason, he was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. ALS in French, signed “Biron,†four pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.25 x 7.25, November 6, 1792. Handwritten letter thanking a minister for the advice given him by Citoyen Egalite regarding the visit of a person with whom he could talk in all confidence about several important matters for the Republic. Politics and military might work together to bring the war to a glorious end next winter, but business cannot end on its own. He enumerates the means which seem to him suitable for putting an end to the war and avoiding a future campaign, such as, for example, dealing with the kings this time around: "We will ripen universal freedom by hating peace and this consideration well deserves some sacrifices of pride from truly republican hearts." Biron deplores the scandalous lawsuit between Kellermann and Custine; he will raise up the downcast courage of the enemies. In fine condition, with a few small stains.
