Description
CONGO DRC
Superb royal ancestor statue BOYO BUYU
Impossible not to compare it to the iconic statue from the Schindler collection, sculpted by the Master of "Kimano Le Vieux" and illustrated in "Mains de Maître" (p201) and in "The Tribal Arts of Africa" (p154), or to the one on display at the Metropolitan, attributed to the same hand
The extraordinary style of these very old works has been perpetuated by the Master said "Kimano Le Jeune" and obviously by other talented sculptors.
Here is a superb confirmation
Bernard de Grunne: "It has been suggested that the great Boyo ancestor statuary would form the archetype of the Luba / Hemba arts by its remarkable plastic quality which mixes the monumental refinement of the Hemba statues, the spherical volumes of the head specific to the Luba and the cubist expressionism of the great magic statuary of the Songye "(Mains de Maîtres, page 184)
Probably from the Baki Hanga clan (Mains de Maîtres)
And from the Basumba sub tribe (The Tribal Arts of Africa)
What may not be incompatible
The Boyo, or Buyu,, sometimes named Sikasingo, Basinkasingo, or Pre Bembe (so named because they share their territory with the Bembe who arrived later) live in eastern Congo, they are the "Lubaïsé" people (or proto Luba) living most northerly.
