Signed by Robert Henry Newell on the amorial bookplate of Henry Preston Child. Tipped in on the front free endpaper is a handwritten note by the author's brother-in-law declining an invitation in the name of the author. The first collection of Newell's humorous letters of imaginary situations and incidents of the Civil War. The letters first appeared in the daily newspapers during the war and would ultimately fill five volumes.

Condition

Some rubbing and scuffing to calf; top corner of rear free endpaper detached; very good.
