Item Details
Description
A Toba Batak Bed-Chest Sumatra, Indonesia, c. 19th to early 20th century A lidded container constructed of thick adze-cut planks secured together with mortise and tenon, a variegated black stain and patina from use. Two large female protective lion (singa) heads at one end, each incised with scrolling and other geometric designs. At the other end are curling motifs. All four side panels are intricately incised in scrolling and other curvilinear designs. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, origin, use, and materials. Called hombung, the Toba Batak people of Sumatra use these as coffers to store heirlooms, other precious items and textiles, and larger ones like this are used as beds for the chiefs in noble houses.
