Description
Guilford or Davidson County, 1800-1820, attributed to cabinetmaker Noah Chaplain or his brother in law Zachariah Hiatt (1772-1860), upper case with scrolled pediment above two highly figured book matched walnut paneled doors, flanked by inset fluted quarter columns and opening to a shelved interior, lower case with fitted desk interior above four dovetailed long drawers flanked by stop fluted inset quarter columns, figured walnut with poplar, yellow pine, and white cedar, 84-1/4 x 42 x 22 in.
Condition
generally good condition and integrity, brasses replaced, typical minor repairs at drawer lips, prospect door possibly replaced, possibly once fitted with central finial and plinth, one corner loss at cornice molding, upper case lacking some vertical dividers, some backboards reset and/or replaced, lacking lower half of bracket feet, dovetailed and rosehead nail construction, typical minor shrinkage and warping to fall board with edge patches
