Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Pp. [i-iv, 1-]5-636, [i-x]. 47 folding engraved plates. (Some toning to first and last few leaves as well as most margins, nine of the folding plates shaved into the image area at the outer edge). Contemporary panelled calf (joints split, old repairs to joints, lettering-piece lacking from spine). Provenance: George Frederick Tavel ( 1773-1829, inscription dated 1794 whilst a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge).

First collected edition of Keill’s Oxford lectures on Newtonian astronomy and physics, this copy from the late-18th century library of a tutor at Cambridge. The author “was one of the very important disciples gathered around Newton who transmitted his principles of philosophy to the scientific and intellectual community, thereby influencing the directions and emphases of Newtonianism."(Dictionary of Scientific Biography, VII, p. 275). He served as Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford from 1712.
