Ted Potter (American, 1933-2006), The Officers of the Guild at the Annual Members Coffee
oil on canvas, signed and dated 2002 to verso, titled and inscribed, gallery wrapped canvas.
65 3/4 x 59 1/2 in.
This painting is from Potter's "Inside the Ropes" series, which was deemed by multiple curators as "offensive subject matter" and therefore not suitable for showing. This series was developed by Potter as a humorous take on the history of late 20th century painting in America and the actual business of the museum / gallery system.
Ted Potter was the first full-time director of the Winston-Salem Gallery of Fine Arts, which developed into the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art under his visionary direction. He then served as director for the Anderson Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond from 1996-2005.
